THE HISTORY OF THE CONNETQUOT RIVER IS NOW AVAILABLE!
One Little River is the story of the Connetquot River, an area on the south shore of Long Island, NY with a remarkable natural and cultural history. First inhabited by Native Americans until 1683, when William Nicoll came from England to settle in land he acquired from the natives. Nicoll and his descendants then held the land and lived on it for almost two hundred years.
Recreational hunting and fishing on the river, began in the early nineteenth century when an inn near the river, which was a stop on a public stage route along the South Country Road, made the abundance of fish, fowl and other game in the area accessible to its patrons. The sport was further developed in 1866, by a select group of prominent businessmen who would purchase the inn and turn it into the fabled South Side Sportsmen's Club, a paradise for millionaires. Vanderbilts, Belmonts, Cuttings, Whitneys, Carnegies and Tiffanys were some of the Club's notable members; while William T. Sherman, U.S. presidents Martin Van Buren, Ulysses S. Grant, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover were a few of the Club's occasional guests.
