17th Annual Friends of Connetquot Fun Trail Ride - 2014

The weatherman was proved wrong again on Sunday, May 4th. A nice warm day with temperatures in the 60s was predicted. However, the day dawned with cloudy skies and 20 to 30 mph winds, which from the outset had the Friends' volunteers - Bob Wilson, Aimee and Randy Schmitt, Ed Kelleher; Fran Levesque, Ginny Fields, Liz Bloom, Bob Labuski - and me struggling with the table cloths to set up for the food and prizes. Despite the challenging conditions, over fifty riders and hikers showed up to support our seventeenth Annual Trail Ride and Hike.  Annette and Ken Leitch and Tom and Nina Conroy did the food pick-ups so our sumptuous lunch could be on time. Gil Bergen, Jessica Anderson-Ruiz and other dedicated staff of Connetquot had the historic barn swept and the tables set up ready for us to proceed. The Friends are very fortunate for the ongoing and new support of the many sponsors who donated to help make this event a success: Nassau-Suffolk Horsemen's Association, Huntington Dog Grooming, Christopher Pratt Landscaping, Smithtown Hunt, Jim and Diana Davies, Paumanok Driving Club, John Fasolo, Connetquot Chiropractic, United Rehabilitation, East End Livestock and Horseman's Association, Acme Radiator, Rojas Insurance (FDC's broker), Mary Linitz, Dawn Electric, The Trailer Guy, and Farm Family Insurance. Thank you all for your generosity.

The food table was set. Bagels and cream cheese came from Terrace Bagelry and Stuff a Bagel; coffee, from D & A Terrace Delicatessen; and munchkins from Dunkin' Donuts welcomed the early comers. The popular seafood bisque from Snapper Inn and Rita's homemade chili were most welcome. Puente D'Oro surprised us with a large tray of Chicken Francese so Rita's ingenuity was put to work and we served the soups hot from the coolers and kept the chicken warm on the barbeque grill...all was well with the world. Other delicious offerings were heroes and salads from Handy Pantry in Bohemia, sliders from Mary's Pizza and Pasta, Stromboli from Francesco's Trattoria, Greek salad from C & L Cafe, antipasto from A & S Fine Foods, fancy cookies from Stanley's and Audrey's bakeries and Rita's amazing brownies and cranberry lemon bars. YUM!

The raffle offered beautiful and generous prize baskets galore, thirty-nine in total, which were mostly put together by Rita and fascinated the participants. Thousands of tickets were sold, especially our popular "Osprey Special," a wingspan, for only $20.00. The large number of tickets sold was due to the generosity of the following donors who either gave their own gift basket or many items to make each basket special: Rider's Choice, Good Shepherd Farm, Oakwood Farm, Outlaw Acres, The Hitchmaster, W E S Trailer Sales, New York Equestrian Center, Doggy Style Grooming, Nassau-Suffolk Horsemen’s Association, Wendy Hodor, Stable Mates Farm, Parkview Riding Center, Sweet Hills Stables, Indian Head Ranch, Shirley Feed, The Hay Loft, Country Farms Polo, R & G Hay, Andrew Goetz Feed, Dover Saddlery, Barry's Saddlery, Stony Hill Equestrian Center, Marianne Flanagan, Total Pet Care, Mars Auto Parts, Agway in Port Jefferson, Maren Milton of Peaceful Woods Farm, HBL Hay-shavings, East End Livestock and Horseman's Association, North Fork Saddlery, Costello's Ace Hardware in East Islip, Coram Equestrian Center, Greenlawn Equestrian Center, Harvest Pride Feed, Old Bethpage Equestrian Center, Martha Clara Vineyards, Knoll Farm, New York Natural Equestrians, Pillow Perfect, Pony Express Bakery, Sonny Garguilo Natural Horsemanship, Studio 69 Tattoo, Elaine Cordingly, Saddle Rock Ranch, Liz and Eliot Bloom, Ginny Fields, Farriers Formula, J J Trapani Farrier, Noelle and Mike Gordon, Go West, Janis Kryl-Realtor of Long Island Horse Properties, Shandon Court, The Tack Shoppe, Diamante Jewelers, Aimee and Randy Schmitt, Papa's Farm and Greenhouses, and Rita Trapani.

In addition, the Friends of Connetquot especially wish to thank all who helped publicize our event: Long Island Equine, The Horse Directory, Nassau-Suffolk Horsemen‘s Association, East End Livestock and Horseman's Association, Islip Horsemen's Association, Smithtown Hunt, Paumanok Driving Club, and New York Natural Equestrians.
