FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Spring 2017

Spring is here! Trees and flowers are blooming throughout the Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Migrating birds are back and some are raising new families. Warmer weather will arrive before too long.

The fish hatchery is up and running and trout are plentiful in the river. Fly fishers are practicing their skills and catching nice size, healthy trout. Fishing sites are filling fast every day.

The Friends of Connetquot have featured two well-attended lectures already this season and our Board member and historian, Bob Giffen, traveled from his home in Vermont to Long Island in April to give a presentation about his recently published book, One Little River, which tells the story of the Connetquot River area and its noteworthy natural and cultural history; it has received accolades from quite a few readers. The publication of this book was sponsored by a grant from the Gerry Foundation, and all proceeds from its sale will benefit Connetquot Preserve. Those interested can purchase the book at the Preserve's gift shop or on the Friends website. Said book is also available in Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The Friends have other events scheduled throughout the year. Look for detailed information about them on our calendar of events in this newsletter and on our website and Facebook page.

Thank you to all of the more than thirty volunteers who attended I Love My Park Day on Saturday, May 6 to help with cleanup and repair projects. Your hard work at the Connetquot Preserve is very much appreciated.

The twentieth annual Trail Ride and Hike was held on Sunday, May 7 and was attended by fifty equestrians, hikers and other enthusiasts. It turned out to be a wonderful day, with fine weather; everyone enjoyed the delicious food and the beautiful raffle prizes donated by many new and long-time contributors that once again generously gave for the benefit of the Preserve. Plans are currently underway for creating the educational programs and printed materials that will inform future visitors to the recently restored mill of its history and technology. Mill tours will begin soon for the general public and school children. Stay tuned.

Please visit the Connetquot Preserve often. Take a walk. Enjoy the magnificent views. Keep an eye out for wildlife and beautiful wildflowers. Stop in for a tour of the main house on a Sunday afternoon.

Sincerely,
Bob Labuski
