FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Summer 2015

Here we are in the midst of summer already. Nevertheless, the Friends' Board has been busy gearing up for the forthcoming fall and winter events and seeking the additional funding for completing the final phase of the restoration of the historic Nicoll Grist Mill.

At the end of July we submitted to the NY State Regional Economic Development Council another Consolidated Funding Application for a matching grant, which would cover fifty percent of the cost of the construction for the mill's final restoration phase, if we succeed. In addition, we are pleased to announce the receipt of a second grant from the Robert D. L. Gardiner Foundation that will allow us to begin construction immediately. In fact, work should be in progress at the time of this publication.

Regarding the Trout Hatchery restoration, although final preparations are in order to supply water to the hatch house within the hatchery from the new fresh water well, progress is temporarily delayed until we find the best location for a necessary degassing tower. However, we expect that the installation of all equipment necessary to begin raising fish from eggs, will begin soon. If all goes well, the first eggs will arrive late this fall or early winter.

Our 18th annual Gala is scheduled for Monday, November 2. We are earnestly seeking donations of suitable items for our Gala auctions. Volunteers are also needed to assemble gift baskets and assist with other duties to make the night a success. If you wish to contribute items or your time, please contact Fran Levesque (flevesque@verizon.net).

Dr. Richard Steinberger was selected to receive the Gil Bergen Preservationist award at this year's Gala; he is a most deserving individual who has been a long-time Friend and supporter. "Doc," as he's fondly known, has invested a great many hours to research all matters pertaining to trout, its rearing and more. His extensive knowledge has helped guide the Friends in their ongoing endeavors to restore the trout hatchery. We are proud to honor one of our own and hope many of our members and supporters will want to join us.

I encourage you to attend our Annual Meeting on Saturday, 3rd October and bring your family and friends. Come to meet the Board members who will be there to greet you. We welcome the opportunity to chat with you and perhaps find out what we're doing right or hear your suggestions for other activities or programs you may like to see added to our repertoire. The annual meeting will include a 30-minute presentation of beautiful images that feature the beauty of the Preserve at its best and in all seasons.

We hope to see you and your family at the Preserve taking advantage of all it has to offer.

Sincerely,
Bob Labuski
