FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Spring 2014

Spring is finally here! Signs of it have begun appearing throughout the Connetquot Preserve. Daffodils are abundant. Many migrant birds can be seen and heard as they come through returning from their wintering grounds; those who breed in Connetquot are steadily acquiring their territories and some have already built their nests, such as the Eastern Bluebird.

The Friends have also been very busy trying to acquire the necessary funding that will keep their pending restoration projects on track, as well as bringing interesting programs to all Preserve visitors and assisting Park staff to spiff-up the preserve:

  • On Saturday, March 15, a full-house audience came to the Preserve to enjoy NY State Park's Biologist Ariana Newell's interesting presentation on amphibians and reptiles of Long Island.
  • A nature photography workshop for beginners was presented by yours truly on Saturday, April 19. Twenty five attendees received instruction and tips on creating quality nature images.
  • On Sunday, April 13, over forty hat-wearing ladies attended the Friends' Annual Ladies Tea hosted by Ginny Fields and Keith Snedecor. All were delighted with the elegant and friendly atmosphere of the event, especially when each was presented with a long-stemmed red rose.
  • I Love My Park Day, Saturday May 3, brought over fifty eager volunteers to the Connetquot Preserve; they arrived early to assist with a number of cleaning and maintenance projects that NY‚ÄąParks staff had deemed important to accomplish that day. Litter removal and several other refurbishments were on the list, including planting some of the flowers and bushes intended for the new butterfly garden.
  • Our Annual Trail Ride and Hike was held on Sunday, May 4. More than fifty riders and their horses, as well as hikers attended the event planned and overseen by Jerry and Rita Trapani.

Now that the weather has improved, restoration of the grist mill should be progressing soon. In accordance with the requirements of the matching grant, the State has been very cooperative in reimbursing us for half of the monies spent on the project so far. However, much remains to be done and additional funding must be obtained to complete the project.

We believe we have finally fulfilled all the necessary requirements for the final permits to be issued so we can start the drilling of a well that will allow setting up the hatchery's hatch house to raise fish from eggs. This project is taking a very long time, but it must be done properly to ensure disease-free trout fingerlings.

Please visit soon to enjoy the sights and sounds that make this one of the finest preserves in New York State.

Sincerely,
Bob Labuski
