FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Fall 2014

First, I would like to thank you for the many ways in which you have contributed to help us continue to support the Connetquot River State Park Preserve, one of the best state park preserves on Long Island.

As we move through the seasons, leaving a good summer and fall behind and facing another winter, a lot has been accomplished during this time, so let me bring you up to date on the Friends' activities.

If you have visited Connetquot Preserve recently, you should have noticed the reconstructed grist mill. We are very pleased with the progress. The first phase of the restoration consisted of rebuilding the interior with new beaming, supports and flooring. The entire exterior has been rebuilt with new roof and siding shingles, windows and doors. The future phases will include reinstalling the original grinding stones, a new water wheel and a sluiceway to drive the wheel.

Another exciting bit of news is that Governor Cuomo has released funds and given the go ahead to reopen the hatchery. The Department of Environmental Conservation has issued all necessary permits for the construction and to resume raising trout there. Bids are currently being accepted for the installation of a fresh water well with the necessary plumbing and electrical supply to the existing hatch house. When all is completed, we are expecting to eventually raise up to 35,000 fish per year from eggs. The fish will be stocked in the river and also used to supply other Long Island freshwater fishing sites. All you fly fishermen out there can get ready to enjoy, once again, a wonderful day of fishing on the Connetquot River.

Our annual Gala was held on Monday, November 3. It was a very successful event, thanks to a devoted Board and corps of volunteers. Please see the recap within this newsletter. Next, we are busy setting up our calendar for 2015, and we plan to include the usual events and programs for your enjoyment, with a new twist or two. Watch our website and Facebook pages for details and dates.

Upon his retirement as Vice President, I would like to thank Jerry Trapani for his many years of service, but I’m happy that he and his wife Rita still want to remain active and contribute their time whenever possible.

Please keep in mind that your support to the Friends and the Connetquot Preserve is extremely valuable for maintaining a thriving Preserve. In closing, I hope to see you there often enjoying a bit of Long Island the way it used to be.

Sincerely,
Bob Labuski
