FOC Newsletter, Chairman's Letter, Winter 2012-13

The Friends have had a busy three months since the last newsletter. The most exciting news is the receipt of a $150,000 State Regional Economic Development grant. This money, with other previously awarded grants will be used toward the reconstruction of the grist mill. The mill project includes framing reinforcement and replacement as needed, new roofing, siding, windows, and doors. The acquisition of this grant is a giant step toward our efforts to revive the park to its well-known former popularity.

We received several inquiries relating to the hatchery after the above grant award was the subject of a recent article in Newsday; after reading it, some people thought that the re-opening of the hatchery was imminent. The Friends ardently wish that were so, but although progress on the hatchery project is slow, we are steadily guiding it toward completion. Work is scheduled to begin soon, and it will include drilling the necessary well, installing piping and electrical connections, as well as constructing a building to house the wellhead and other equipment.

Bid requests, from contractors, for the hatchery and mill projects will be available within a few weeks. We should see construction begin at both sites very soon.

In December, we also succeeded in gaining the support of the Norcross Wildlife Foundation. Norcross not only awarded us a grant of $1000 for the turtle raft and sign that will be installed in the hatchery area this spring, they also gave us an additional discretionary grant of $750 in support of our programs.

A new family program that the Norcross discretionary grant is facilitating will be held on May 19; it will feature dedicated wildlife rehabilitators Bobby and Cathy Horvath, who will bring along many interesting live animals for close observation and will discuss their behaviors and characteristics (please see details on Page 4). I hope you and your family will join us.

Another new happening is the Ladies' Tea Party that was announced in our previous newsletter and has been sold out with fifty-six reservations. I would like to acknowledge board member, Ginny Fields, for initiating and overseeing this event. Due to the enthusiastic response, I'm sure it will become an annual affair.

I Love My Park Day is being held at the preserve and other parks all over Long Island on May 4th. This day will offer people the opportunity to volunteer in park beautification, clean-up and other conservation projects. To show our love for Connetquot Preserve, the Friends' volunteers are planning the refurbishing of the old water turbine pump, located near the grist mill; this work will include surface rust removal and painting the unit.

Visit the park often. Enjoy this piece of Long Island's natural resources and help preserve it for future generations.

Sincerely,
Bob Labuski
